Matt Gio

Lecturer/Music Producer

Matt Gio is a music producer, educator, and curriculum leader with over two decades of experience in the Australian music industry and higher education. Since 2018, he has lectured in audio production, music, and creative industries, consistently receiving high feedback for both his teaching and unit development. He currently leads units across project development, music mixing, and studio production, and has played a central role in reshaping audio and music degrees at SAE to reflect contemporary industry practice and inclusive education principles.

Matt is a recognised expert in curriculum development and teaching pedagogy, contributing to program accreditation, national curriculum design, and the integration of Active Learning, Project-Based Learning, and Blended Learning across creative disciplines. In 2024, he was awarded a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in recognition of his leadership in learning and teaching.

Alongside his academic work, Matt has produced and engineered projects for a wide range of nationally and internationally recognised artists, while owning and operating three of Western Australia’s most successful recording studios. In 2018, he received the Kiss My WAMI “Best Studio Producer” award and co-wrote and produced Fruit by Abbe May, a top ten finalist in the Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition.
A skilled collaborator, Matt is known for his respectful and adaptable approach, which has earned him trust across a wide range of artists and communities. As Lead Producer for WAM’s Sounds of… regional series, he has mentored hundreds of artists throughout Western Australia, including in some of the state’s most remote and hard-to-access communities. His work reflects a deep commitment to inclusive music development, cultural sensitivity, and long-term mentorship.

In 2025, Matt completed a Master of Musicology at the University of Sydney. His thesis, Beyond the Song: Authorship and Production in Australian Music, is an ethnographic study that draws on his industry connections to explore the evolving role of the music producer and the complexities of copyright, authorship, and creative recognition in the modern recording process.

Matt’s production credits include work with Abbe May, Katy Steele, San Cisco, Troye Sivan, Southern River Band, Break Even, Grace Barbé, Kill Devil Hills, Voltaire Twins, and many others.
